Woodrow Wilson International Award for Corporate Citizenship

The Woodrow Wilson Center developed a short video, highlighting Joerres' commitment to corporate citizenship through Manpower and the many ways that the company has positively influenced the local communities in which we serve.

The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars recently honored Manpower Inc. Chairman and CEO Jeff Joerres with the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship. A tribute to all 33,000 Manpower employees worldwide, and the thousands of hours they give unselfishly each year to charitable causes in the communities where they live and work, this award represents the passion and energy that is deeply embedded in our corporate culture and the difference that we know we can make as a powerful change agent both locally and globally.

The prestigious Woodrow Wilson awards are presented to individuals around the world who have served with distinction in public life and share former U.S. President Woodrow Wilson's belief in public discourse and scholarship. The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars of the Smithsonian Institution explores global issues through open and informed dialogue. Past winners have included founder of Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, diplomat Henry Kissinger, automotive pioneer Shoichiro Toyoda, and Prime Minister of Australia John Winston Howard, among other international leaders recognized for their corporate citizenship and public service.

Corporate citizenship is a commitment to doing well by doing the right thing. We have always recognized the role that we play as a trusted source of employment for people from all walks of life. It's our core mission and everywhere you go you're likely to see people whose lives have been touched by Manpower. Here are a few examples:

  • We placed 5 million people into jobs in 2007.
  • In 2006, we trained 50,000 people in essential skills and helped them achieve sustainable employment through our various Workforce Development Programs around the world.
  • Manpower employees contributed nearly 30,000 hours of time, in North America in 2006 alone, to community service projects to benefit their neighbors in need.
  • We have trained more that 1,000 people in our Vocational Training Centers in Tamil Nadu, India; resulting in seven-fold increases in annual wages.
  • Manpower France's Job Academy is connecting hundreds of unemployed people with jobs.
  • As the first company to sign the Athens Ethical Principles, we are leading the fight to end human trafficking.

It's our employees' commitment to social responsibility that provides Manpower with the platform to be recognized for such noble contributions. These underscore the significance of what we do best - providing the training and support that connect people to employment opportunities that may otherwise not exist.
