Job Description

Currently, the Savannah Container Plant is seeking applicants to fill a Mechanic position. This position involves weekly rotating 8 hr shifts (10-12 hr shifts as needed) on a Monday through Friday work schedule. Saturday/Sunday/Holiday may be scheduled to meet customer demands. Overtime work (in excess of 40 hours per week) is often required.



*Duties of the General Mechanics L3 include but are not limited to repairing, modifying, and overhauling all mechanical equipment including: pneumatic, hydraulic, gear driven, and machine tools; correcting malfunctions in hydraulic, vacuum, and compressed air systems and adjusting general controls and regulators; maintaining a wide variety of specialized equipment such as: Die Cutter, Corrugator, etc.; machining, brazing, welding, and soldering parts as required; installing and commissioning new equipment; reading and interpreting diagrams and blue prints; conducting preventative maintenance on all plant machinery and facilities; coordinating with other trades to minimize interruption and down time on equipment.



*This work requires physical exertion in a heavy industrial environment which includes continuous standing, climbing stairs, exposure to various temperatures, and frequent twisting and bending. Personal protective gear is a must: safety glasses, steel toed boots, ear plugs, etc.



*In addition, our electricians and mechanics operate in a multi-craft environment and, as such must possess and demonstrate a general, operating knowledge of each field to be successful in the workplace.



*Candidates for this position must complete/pass the Skilled Trade and General Mechanics test, the interview process, physical/drug testing, reference checks, and background checks. Individuals hired on must satisfactorily complete a 120-day probationary period. During this 4-month period, you will be evaluated at monthly intervals on the following performance criteria: Safety, Quality of Work, Ability, Attendance and Conduct. Employees may be terminated at any time during this probationary period if their safety, performance, attendance, etc. are not satisfactory.



*Upon satisfactory completion of the 120-day probationary period, you may also elect to join the union (International Association of Machinists - IAM).



*Mechanics are expected to complete advancement training/testing and achieve Level II status within 3 years of their hire date, and progress to Level I after working in Level II for a minimum of 1 year but no more than 3 years.
